'this' is B is a pronoun with an unclear referent.
D implies that the town has become the best-preserved medieval town in Scandanavia, changing the meaning

D does change the meaning of the sentence.... It says that it has become the best preserved town in Scandinvia presumably after it has become the World Heritage Site. Not good....

I checked the idiom list in Manhattan GMAT and it gives " as a result of" as a valid idiom

So we need to confirm this...Sorry about the confusion

Any sentence contains semicolon, the later part should act like a separate sentence with its own verb.

(B) is closer but 'as a result of this' is redundant.
