With most of the Assembly still favouring a constitutional monarchy rather than a republic, the various groupings reached a compromise which left Louis XVI little more than a figurehead: he had perforce to swear an oath to the constitution, and a decree declared that to retract the oath, to head an army for the purpose of making war upon the nation, or permitting anyone to do so in his name would amount to de facto abdication.
A)to retract the oath, to head an army for the purpose of making war upon the nation, or permitting
B)retracting the oath, to head an army for the purpose of making war upon the nation, or permitting
C)retracting the oath, heading an army for the purpose of making war upon the nation, or to permit
D)retracting the oath, heading an army for the purpose of making war upon the nation, or permitting
E)retracting the oath, to head an army for the purpose of making war upon the nation, to permit

A:'to retract the oath...would amount to' doesnt sound as right as 'retracting the oath...would amount to' C,D: 'retracting the oath' seems a major point and the thing that follows it should be a subclause explaining what that retracting entails..so I think 'to head an army..' is better. E: After the explanation of what retracting entails, you are back to the main part of the sentence, so should get back to permitting. You dont want a subclause anymore.
What is the OA?
