I thought of option 2 as well.
people is plural and none here refers to many individual persons
So B is the best answer

None of the people were - sounds corrects

But isn't "people" a collective noun and hence will take a singular verb "was"??

Louis Cruise Lines spokesman Michalis Martheftis said none of the people on board was in danger.

1. none of the people on board was in danger .
2. none of the people on board were in danger.
3. no one of the people on board was in danger.
4. no one of the people on board were in danger.
5. no of the people on board was in danger.

Help with the appropriate answer

The verb must agree with its subject. None is singular. Hence was is appropriate. A is the right answer.

If you still have problems - read the sentence this way

Of the people on board, None WAS in danger.

Reverting the above to the original sentence

None of the people on board was in danger.

I go for B.

"none" of [Noun] + [verb]
"people" is a PLURAL noun, therefore it requires a plural verb -> people were in danger

I will change my answer to B. "None" can be singular or plural depending on the context of the sentence. Here "People" is plural , so we need to use "were" instead of "was".
