shouldnt it be "evidence in support of " ? Thats what prompted me to choose D

"evidence in support of" would be considered WORDY in GMATland because "evidence supporting" expresses the same idea in fewer words.

recent study of ancient clay deposits has provided new evidence supporting the theory of global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact that contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other creatures some 65 million years ago.

(A) supporting the theory of global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact that

The meteorite impact didn't directly contribute to the extinction.

(B) supporting the theory that global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact

Right

(C) that supports the theory of global forest fires that were ignited by a meteorite impact and that

Two Problems

global forest fires that were ignited (wordy/redundant)

The evidence did not cause the extinction

(D) in support of the theory that global forest fires were ignited by a meteorite impact and that$

in support of the theory (wordy)
also the THEORY didn't cause the extinction.

(E) of support for the theory of a meteorite impact that ignited global forest fires and

evidence of support for the theory of a meteorite is imprecise, awkward and wordy

[/i]

Good explanation...B it is.
I got a little confused b/w B and C...but the problem with C is of 'that':

that supports the theory of global forest fires that were ignited by a meteorite impact and that
The third 'that' can parallel with either of the early ones...changing the meaning in either case...any thoughts??
