none (like all) is used as a plural. anyone, no one, nobody is used singular! cheers!

Accoding to Manhattan SC book, there are 5 indefinite pronouns called SANAM- Some, Any, None, All, Most. For these you have to look at the object of the "of" construction to determine the number of the subject

For eg in our case none of them, since them is plural should have a plurar verb 'are.

None of the team is playing well.

None of the documents are clear.


None takes singular or plural based on the context. This explanation is just based on Manhattan SC text.

None is "singular". So, "is" is right.

page 30, MGMAT.

None of the girls IS playing.

some of the girls ARE playing.

Baski, don't you think the sentence that you quoted is flawed.

None of the team is playing well.

This should either be

None of the teams is playing well.
OR
None of the players in the team is playing well.

None of the documents are clear. is also not right. It should be

None of the document is clear.

ok well I thought the same way as some others on this post... MGMAT says use the of construction for None, which is plural, so are

however that is why this caught my attention

The OA is A , the singular version

No I got this while reading COSMOS by Carl Sagan so I would imagine the sentence is gramtically correct since it was in published book and sold thousands of copies

Any big guns have an explanation for this? It definitely threw me off.

The word "Individually" may have something to do with the verb being singular.

I still am confused.

why does manhattan gmat say to look at the of construction following the indefinite pronoun None ? Obviously it looks like their might be exceptions?

"None" can be used as singular or plural. If there is something explicit in the statement which decides the number in the statement then the verb depends on the number.
For example :Indivually decides the vernb and hence is is necessary.



Example:None of the document is clear.

-In this example document is singular and hence singular verb "is " is required.

Example:None of the documents are clear.

-In this example documents is plural and hence singular verb "are " is required.

NONE is an interesting word ! :)

When 'none' means - not one / no one - it is singular

Eg : none of us are perfect - sounds right but wrong

none of us IS perfect - is the winner.

Simple just translate none to not one or no one and see if the sentence still makes sense, if it does then use singular !

Eg: none ARE so fallible as those who are sure thay are right :)
