after the "and" there needs to be a new s/v, we are left with B and D.
I think B is correct, "to do that" is more correct and ll to previous sectence.

a)... it should always replace a noun (in this case its replacing a sentence)
b) has devoted his subsequent career to do that (this looks like he is still doing it)
c) devoted his subsequent career to such an end (wordy illogical)
d) has devoted his subsequent career for that (same as b)
e) devoted his subsequent career to that end (Correct)
