Here is what I think
this one is kinda tricky because the idiom for differences is both "in , between"
A is wrong determine should determines because it is referring to the listener so it should be singular.
B is correct help is in agreement with Differences in terms of number and also Determining.
C is wrong because the idiom for help is help in. So "in" is needed and it's passive so it's awkward here
D is wrong because helps should be help
E the same for C (passive)
here I say passive is awkward because THE TWO EARS is important for the meaning and it should in direct form, we only use passive to undermine the importance of the given subject. I hope I am clear.

IMO E.

This is how i see,
B changes the meaning imo, subtle differences in how the sound is heard and not in ears.

Anbody has the OA fo rthis ques?

I picked E but the OA is A.

the below explanation might help.

The in vs. between issue is an idiom. I say differences in X (just one thing) or differences between X and Y (two things). This sentence has one thing: how the two ears hear a given sound. So, I need "differences in." Eliminate D and E.

in this problem, you are not talking about the difference between the two ears; you're talking about the differences in one action - the same action - that's being performed by each of the two ears. therefore, you say 'the difference in the way the two ears perform this function.'

more illustrations:
the differences between the two twins are displayed in stark relief when they argue with each other.
the differences in the way the two twins play the violin are displayed in stark relief when they play duets together.
