According to Italy's top anti-Mafia prosecutor, the ailing mobster came to take refuge in Corleone, a town famous because of the “The Godfather” and near to those he most trusted.

a) the ailing mobster came to take refuge in Corleone, a town famous because of “The Godfather” and near to those he most trusted
b) famous because of “The Godfather,” the ailing mobster came to take refuge in Corleone, a town near to those he most trusted
c) the ailing mobster, famous because of “The Godfather,” came to take refuge in Corleone, a town near to those he most trusted
d) near to those he most trusted, the ailing mobster came to take refuge in Corleone, a town famous because of “The Godfather”
e) Corleone, famous because of “The Godfather,” was the town that the ailing mobster came to take refuge in because it was near to those he most trusted

C is wrong is because of a misplaced modifier:
the ailing mobster, famous because of “The Godfather,” came to take refuge in Corleone, a town near to those he most trusted
Here we think the ailing mobster is famous because of the movie when it should be the town of Corleone! This phrase should go after Corleone - A is the only choice that does that.

Hrm, I picked E.

The reference of "he" in A) is ambiguous-- did the mobster take refuge in the town because it was near to those whom the mobster trusted? Or, did the Mobster take refuge in the town because it was the town that the prosecutor trusted? The pronoun he could refer to either, if we're looking at strict grammatical rules.

E) seems alright - a bit more winded, but the pronoun reference is a bit clearer. In A) both are very close to each other.

What type of a rule does the GMAT use to clarify pronoun references? Obviously all grammar schools differ... including GMAT!

B) is wrong because of a dangling modifier
C) is wrong because of a misplaced modifier
D) misplaced modifier

Elminated B C and D. B and C b/c modifier is misplaced. the ailing mobster is not famous b/c of "The Godfater"

D. he wasn't orginilly near those he trusted, he moved to Corleone b/c there are ppl he can trust. this one is just silly.

Now A and E. At first I picked A, but now looking back at it for the second time. I don't see anything wrong w/ E.

Any thoughts? wuts OA?
