"In contrast to" is the correct idiom
I go with D

Correct..".in contrast to" is the correct idiom...that's what seperates D from E..

otherwise both are consise and clear...

I thought the idiom is " contrast....with"

I picked E because of the "contrast...with" idiom, I did not know that there is an idiom for " In Contrast...to", can someone give me an example of the usage of this idiom....

BTW, what is the OA?

The correct idiom is contrast X with Y..not In contrast with X,Y.
In contrast to is correct in this sentence.

(D) In contrast to Haydn's symphonies, Mahler's demonstrate a much freer use of dissonance.

Don't we need Mahler's symphonies ? or just the use of Mahler's will do?

please clarify

I don't like any of the answers here.

In almost all the answers it says, symphonies demonstrate. It has to be a person to demonstrate something not symphonies.
C, D and E say that symphonies demonstrate.

B uses a wrong comparison.

A does the right comparison and could be the only possible choice here.

(C) In contrast to those of Haydn, the symphonies of Mahler demonstrate a much more free use of dissonance.... is wrong because "much more". Redundancy
(E) In contrast with Haydn's symphonies, those of Mahler use dissonance much more freely.
"in contrast with" is wrong

D is correct
