Debating between "have sheltered" vs "were sheltered". "have" suggests that they actively decided to sheltered, whereas "were" suggests that they were put in shelters by some other people.

IMO D

What is the OA?

OA is D.............still dont understand why????

when someone "have" seeked shelter, that someone chose the type of shelter (ie igloos vs mud huds).

when someone "were" put in shelter, that someone were placed in the shelter by another entity.

The Inuits chose their type of shelter instead of being placed in the shelters by an external entity.

The choices were between D and E, because A/B contain "sheltering", C is wordy and confusing.

What's wrong with "sheltering" in A & B......up until recently usage of "up" such as cleaned up etc is inappropriate on GMAT <<Source>>

Would go with E. Because its past - up until recent times so would be were shelterd
B,C & D - have misplaced modifiers.

Wow - I was way off. but stuck betweek D and E...reading the above comments were is def. wrong. but how come "have sheltered" - isnt this present perfect??????

Not sure of the NY times but this is how I see this SC

Recently - adverb should modify the verb.

which it does very well in 'D' and doesn't do so in 'A'

I was between 'D' & 'E'. Despite having too many clauses in it 'D' makes sense to me.
