C. double is a verb so "that doubled those in the previous quarter" is correct.
C also maintains llism as well: earnings in the first qt ......... that those in the previous qt".

Comparing like with like is the key here.
Earnings of the first quarter cannot be compared with the previous quarter. Earnings of the first quarter must be compared with Earnings of the second quarter.
This rules out A, B and E
Between C and E, I would go for E because the prepositional phrase in the beginning:
"Exceeding even the figures...."
Should refer to the company's earnings rather than the company itself, which is done only in E.
