Even clearer what exceeded expectations, the company or its earnings...well maybe this does not clear things up...the earnings exceeded expectations, and therefore the company exceeded expectations. I think it could be both

you don't double a 'previous quarter', you double the earnings of the previous quarter

Could it be because it says:

"...double THE previous year... " Therefore, there is a ellipsis for double the previous year earnings...
