Confusing indeed...took me a while...
A is my best answer.
E doesn't make sense. B is incorrect because "he" is referring to the director.
I don't see "him" as clear reference in A, C, D. However, I eliminated C and D because I feel that it is not the movie that was directed, it is the actor Clark.

beckee, i wish i had the OA too. This is certainly one of the most perplexing SCs Ive come across. Maybe one of our resident geniuses can provide some explanation. I just couldnt resist posting this one up, even without the OA !

Possibly E.
Clause "under the deft direction of Mark Spencer" is trying to modify - Clarke Gable, and E has the sub-clause starting with Clarke Gable, however, I am wary about "after being earlier..." part of the clause, "after" and "earlier" sounds redundant.

Each one has a mistake. Bad SC (obviously not OG).

I don't think any of the above answers are right. Hence there is no OA..

1 - 'who had earlier directed him ' - incorrect
two promouns in the same clause, 'him' should follow 'Clark Gabriel' and not precede it.

2. - In 'The Rainbow Man, he' he is ambiguous - dangling modifier
- incorrect

3. - 'the movie Visionary' is a noun and not a modifier which should have been the case

4 - 'the movie Visionary' is a noun, same issue as in '3'

5 - most sensible one of the lot.
Again, 'directed by him ' him is too far from 'Clark Gabriel ' to modify it

Caveat: I dont know the OA, but wanted to open it up for some good ole GMAT Club discussion

Under the deft direction of Mark Spencer, who had earlier directed him in The Rainbow Man, Clark Gabriel has given another stunning performance in the movie Visionary.

1. who had earlier directed him in The Rainbow Man, Clark Gabriel has given another stunning performance in the movie Visionary.

Not sure what HIM points to - Mark of Clark? Though it looks like it's modifying Clark and hence this choice seems good. The relative clause "who had earlier directed.." clearly points to Mark.

2. who had earlier directed Clark Gabriel in The Rainbow Man, he has given another stunning performance in the movie Visionary.

He is suspect.

3. who had earlier directed him in The Rainbow Man, the movie Visionary has another stunning performance by Clark Gabriel.

The opening prepositional phrase Under the deft direction now modifies the movie visionary - Again... HIM is suspect.

4. the movie Visionary has another stunning performance by Clark Gabriel, who had earlier been directed by him in The Rainbow Man.

Passive.

5. Clark Gabriel has given another stunning performance in the movie Visionary after being earlier directed by him in The Rainbow Man.

I am not sure what after being earlier directed by him modifies - Movie visionary or Clark.

Few messes i have seen in my life can equal this one in their sheer power to annihilate sane thinking.

None of the choices makes sense. All my pronoun and Modifier understanding has been thrown out the window.

Under the deft direction of Mark Spencer - This is a prepositional phrase - which can modify any noun - Clark Gabriel or the movie itself. As such the choices close to Gabriel or Movie (D and E) seemed ok. But E does not make sense to me.

I am stuck between 3 and 4. I am going in with 4.

Its down to D or E for me, because the preopsitional phrase has to go with either "movie" or "Clark".

Out of the 2 choices, I like E better....
