For me it should be A
We test drove a car- Past tense. And at that time it was having engine trouble and not it had engine trouble before we tes drove it.
It will be interesting to know the real answer.

I would think both are ok depending on the context of the sentence.
You use an ing modifier when you want to modify the whole object and not only the word preceded by the relative pronoun, in which case, you use that or which. No?
