This is a very old question and almost everytime 90% of the people chose E because that sounds best.
Even after seing this question after long time I was again dwindling between C and E and chose to E to be correct only to find that I am wrong again the nth time.
I think the only problem in E is "surest indication on earth of sunspot cycle" . It should be "surest indication of sunspot cycle on Earth"

These gmat guys are real cunning people in hiding the OA in dusguise of an almost correct answer.

Stylistically C looks good.
On Earth, the rate at which trees grow is believed to be among the surest indications of sunspot cycles , as seen in the rings visible in the cross sections of their trunks.

as seen in the rings visible should refer to the tree(growth et.al) and not the sunspot cycles. For this reason - I believe C is incorrect.

Among the surest indications on Earth of sunspot cycles is believed to be the rate at which trees grow, as seen in the rings visible in the cross sections of their trunks. This seems to be the correct answer !
