A) Mistake in original is that it seems to convey that kittinger piloted his balloon "while" setting a distance record. This is incorrect.

B) same mistake as in the original

C) No mistake.

D) no need of using the perfect tense

E) long wordy and awkward.

OA is "C".
I just do not like the use of becoming here. It does not seem right to me. Becoming shows a continuous action whereas here it is one-time action.
