i have it down to A and D, and will choose D.
I dont think 'he had' is needed in this sentence; 'he ran' is fine because it is the only action in the sentence and therefore the past perfect is unecessary.

B- run on sentence.
E - uses "had" unnecessarily
It boils down to either C or D. They both look good to me. Which one is right or wrong?
