c) one of the school -> should be schools

d) the only school-> modifies the meaning

I'm going with B. B and D are both grammatically correct, but D changes the meaning of the sentence. Also, "one of the many X that are..." is idiomatic.

I'll go for D. Its clear and concise. The other options look redundant and confusing.

On second thoughts I'll have to go with B. D does change the meaning of the sentence.

I tried to justify the use of "only" myself from the same exact site, and never be able to know what is right and what is wrong.

This is a similar problem:
11-p205278?t=30282&hilit=+Higher+interest+rate+only+one+the+factors+albeit+important+one#p205278

and according the the OA posted, the rule from that site is not correct.

tough question. clearly it is between a and b. the others dont match or change meaning.

if you were goign thru this quickly you would cross of 'b', because 'are' is not required for 'one of'.

but if you look closely, 'is' is called for when using 'one of' and is used when it says Lanacaster 'is'. But many schools, calls for plural, 'are'.

this is really tough one, and easy to overlook. But i say answer is definitely b.

I also think it is A, as the writer is drawing particular attention to 'Lancaster' (by using 'only') and is emphasizing that 'Lancaster' is what is close to his heart.

Hi guys the correct answer should be B

I have an admission to make, I CREATED that problem after reading that grammar rule. I wanted to put myself in the shoes of the gmat tester and wanted to come up with a convoluted question that would not only help me remember the rule, but also help other clubbers remember the nuance of this "one of the many" rule.

The important thing to remember is the subtle difference between rule 2 and 3. Its singular when "only one of" or "only one of those" is used - this would point to answer being A, BUT this rule should not interfere with rule 2 in which a construction of "one of those...

this should be B...

because..the restrictive pronoun "That"..clearly refers to Schools..there is no ambiguity about it..thefore "is" is wrong..we need "are"...

imo, it should be D though B is gramatically correct but it changes meaning as under:

B means "there are many schools that are close to my heart and there is only one Lancaster.
D means only Lancaster is close to my heart and it is the original meaning of the sentence.

So D make sense to me. I also chose B before reading D but after reading it, i go with D.

Although, the rule does state that:

Rule 2: In a more complex form 'one of those who..' or 'one of the things that..' a plural verb is used
Rule 3: When 'only preceds 'one of'/'one of those', a singular verb is used (this supercedes rules 2)
i.e. Ram is the only one of our employee who isalways alert.

I'm assuming you chose the plural verb, 'are' in B, because Rule 3 lists 'one of' and 'one of those' (and NOT 'one of the things that') to be singular.

However, I dont see how 'one of the things', as used in this Lancaster example, is any different from 'one of those who', as used in the Rule 3 example.

I still feel that it should be singular, 'is', rather than plural, 'are'. Not just based on the rule, but based on the meaning and sound. It is only 'Lancaster' that 'is' close to my heart -- not the 'many schools'.

Lancaster is only one of the [many schools that] is close to my heart.

Took me awhile to digest, but I think these examples are correct because 'total sales' and 'the anti-budworm agents' are considered 'collective nouns' here and therefore singular.

not sure though...any thoughts??

Many can be singular or plural. Since we are talking about one of many schools the verb should be plural.
