Its between A and D. I'd go for A. "less of a" is colloquial, and also a has elliptical construction.

Although it could well be D :-o - I'd be very interested in OA, because there is some debate over how often gmat tests ellipsis.

There is a wide spread belief that young people have a smaller commitment to work and a career than their parents and grandparents and that the source of the change lies in the collapse of the "work ethic".

(A) a smaller commitment to work and a career than their parents and grandparents
(B) less of a commitment to work and a career than their parents and grandparents
(C) a smaller commitment to work and a career than that of their parents and grandparents
(D) less of a commitment to work and a career than their parents and grandparents had
(E) a lessening of the commitmet to work and a career that their parents had

OA to follow. please explain your choices

My answer is C.
(A) a smaller commitment to work and a career than their parents and grandparents
(B) less of a commitment to work and a career than their parents and grandparents
(C) a smaller commitment to work and a career than that of their parents and grandparents (construction smaller ..., than that of ... seems ok to me)
(D) less of a commitment to work and a career than their parents and grandparents had (what parents had? "less of a commitment"?)
(E) a lessening of the commitmet to work and a career that their parents had

D.

I don't think you can say "smaller commitment". Smaller generally implies an exact (countable) quantity, and commitment doesn't fit. A, C are out for me.

B is missing "had"
E implies that young people have the same career that their parents had.

'less' is required for non-countable, 'committment' and need 'had' to show that the belief of their parents/grandparents occurred before the young people.
