This is confusing... Let's start eliminating.
A.. Leave it as of now.
 B . "are" modifies the meaning of the sentence in an awkward manner - Eliminate
 C . "those of" makes no sense - Eliminate
D. Let's come back to it.
 E . As...as is the correct usage - Eliminate.

Now we are left with A and D. Let's go back to the meaning of the sentence. China, Netherlands and Hungary are shown as an example to display the different kinds of countries. The underlined phrase modifies countries. A is pretty straightforward.

I think it should be A.

so OA is A, hehe i picked D. i guess "that are as varied as" is not as concise as "as varied as". I just used 6 as's in one sentence. :oops:

sodenso, I meant the presence of "are" in that particular sentence. It didn't fit well there. In the above example, "they" is implicit in the seconds part, so it should be "but are". Choice E. I might be wrong here. It looks a bit tricky.
