Its B for me..

that is needed to show comparison.., and would be true is in the correct tense, as we are reffering to an event in 1960's (hence past tense)

D seems alright ,In as fundamental that is incorrect .In sentence we are making a comparison ,so would be true of does not fit in comparison as stated by C

I went for D as well. as fundamental....as would (fundamental) the writings~...hope it corrects.

Between C and D, I will go with D as "be true of" in option C is redundant.
