I'll go with D. The reason: sentence should start with a descriptive phrase and should have past perfect (had).

i am with C on this...Howard sten HAD success in terrestrial radio but NOW he IS on SIRUS..

i.e he is no longer broadcasting on terrestrial radio...that is why a simple HAD would do..

Also, what are the usage rules for Though and Even though?

IMO (A) is correct. additional "had" is for past perfect tense which is required to convey that the action happened before another action in the past.

'having' in D,E is not conveying the contrast.
having X, Howard opted out. (no contrast)
though / eventhough X, Howard opted out. (contrast)

Thats how I eliminated D,E. Waiting for OA.

OA answer, anyone? I originally went with C, but the past perfect tense principle makes me think A is the answer...

A for me..

Perfect tense is required here to convey that fact that Howard had a period of success in the past with Terrestrial before he opted( Simple Past) out.

We are referring to 2 different incidents that have happened in the past.So we need a past perfect tense here.

action 1: opted
action 2(before action1) :has success broadcating

past perfect tense = had + past participle

past participle here is "had success broadcasting"

past perfect tense = had had success broadcasting
