IMO

Compare with and contrast with fall in the same lines. It is the preferred form in GMAT.

Compare to and contrast to would be used in abstract or figurative speech. For eg. Compared to a mid-summer night's dream or in contrast to a mid-summer night's dream

Compare with / Contrast with...more tangible forms.

This fabric compared with that feels better.
This fabric in contrast with the other feels better.

In addition to previous post:

AFAIK, ‘in contrast to’ and ‘in contrast with’ are mainly interchangeable; each expression is used to emphasize the dissimilarities.

However, ‘compare with’ and ‘compare to’ have different meanings and, consequently, are used differently: while ‘compare with’ is still used to emphasize the dissimilarities, ‘compare to’ is used to emphasize similarities.

I highly doubt that "In contrast to" and "in contrast with" are interchangeable. I will do my research and let you guys know what I find out. If you know for sure that they are interchangeable, please post reasoning/examples

No, I don’t know that for sure; just heard so from a number of people whose knowledge of English was better than mine… That’s why I wrote ‘AFAIK’… Sorry if it isn't true after all :oops:

Dude don't feel sorry, it is a learning experience for all of us :)....keep throwing ideas....let's debate it through and see if it can be made into a rule.

Anyways check my examples, this is what GMAT usually tests on. Figurative vs non figurative speech to distinguish between compare to and compare with.
