In D, them modifying phrase modifies the whole clause but it should only modify courtship because courtship assists flies to test hydrocsarbons ................................
those of others implies you're distinguishing from a specific thing associated with species. here, you're just distinguishing one species from another.
The choice for me was between A and E, But you would distinguish one species (singular) from that of others.
Also the phrase 'and apparently this assists...', modifies the phrase 'Hydrocarbons, with which fruit flies perfume themselves....., are known to be important in courtship,' Also are refers to Hydrocarbons and would require a noun modifier,'apparently assisting' in choice E is an adverbial modifier.
distinguish their species from those of others (where those means "the species) Is it a correct idiom? or it is only not ll?
BTW, is species plural?
OA is E
Distinguish Apples from Oranges Distinguish White Apples from Other Apples Distinguish White Apples from Others (Here its clear Others --Other Apples)
Distinguish White Apples from those of Others ( those of Other Apples --> those represents what.)
Distinguish Leaves of Apples from those of Oranges [ those- leaves ]
Is it clear now?

Thanks x2,
I understand your examples. Nice ones.
(1) For all below, the subject you are comparing is the apple itself. So you do not need “that/those” Distinguish Apples from Oranges Distinguish White Apples from Other Apples Distinguish White Apples from Others (Here its clear Others --Other Apples)
(2) While, the following example compares the leaves of apple and leaves of orange. So, we need “those” here. Distinguish Leaves of Apples from those of Oranges [ those- leaves ]
very clear.
But my problem is that I think the question I posted is more relevant to (2). We are not comparing the species of the flies, rather than the flies themselves …
Do I have any logic problem here?
BTW, is species plural? What is the singular form?
