Should be "is descended" so between A and E, I'll go with E.

. Australian embryologists have found evidence that suggests that the elephant is descended from an aquatic animal, and its trunk originally evolved as a kind of snorkel.
A. that suggests that the elephant is descended from an aquatic animal, and its trunk originally evolved
B. that has suggested the elephant descended from an aquatic animal, its trunk originally evolving
C. suggesting that the elephant had descended from an aquatic animal with its trunk originally evolving
D. to suggest that the elephant has descended from an aquatic animal and its trunk originally evolved
E. to suggest that the elephant is descended from an aquatic animal and that its trunk originally evolved

IMO A

A real weird question!!!
'A' would lack parallelism but still is the best choice.

E should be it.
Use of "that" twice points to the fact that both that facts are "suggested" and the 2nd fact is not just the author's opinion. After comma, the sentence about the snorkel could be easily misperceived as the opinion of the author and not the suggestion of the scientists. However, that is not the case in the sentence; so D is not correct. Other choices have lack of parallelism, as correctly pointed out by others.

IMO E) , no need for present perfect so D) is out

Ask this question to yourself! You ARE a descendant of homo sapiens vs. you DESCENDED from homo sapiens- which is correct? The 2nd part could lead us to believe that you CLIMBED DOWN from homo sapiens! Of course, we know what you mean, but the examiner may not.
In a way you are right. This is a rare example of unconventional use of English, but the word "descended" is used in a different context.

E, it should be.

because second "that" makes the sentences parallel and hence "its" correctly refers to "elephant".
