E is correct for clear and concise ..
"were" in C is plural whereas "News" is singular ....thus C is incorrect .

News is plural but takes singular verb. For example, we say No news is good news. We don't say No news are good news. How ever, Still news is plural.

In E, the sentence does not look complete to me.

news of these shots took four days by swift messenger to reach X

News took four days by SM??? Passive voice of SM took four days to deliver the news of these shots. What I am saying is news by itself does not take 4 days. delivery of news took four days by SM.

When we say news took four days, Is delivery implicit?

news is always "singluar"

good news is....
bad news is ...

A,C --> were incorrect.
Also
A --> which incorrectly modifies shots.
B (out) -- that shots was sent by swift messenger.
--> it could mean "swift messenger sent shots ..." instead of news.

between D and E

D --> another ... in additon redundant..

E looks good and concise.

I too will go with E

Of the remaining 4, 2 have 'in order to' which is wordy and the other 2 have the plural form 'were' for the singular News.

However, choice E is also awkward in that the swift messenger is not correctly placed. The sentence must ideally stress on the slow response of the swift messenger and not on the news itself. Choice E says that the news itself took X days to reach city Y...????

This jpg image, I think, is definitely from GMAT Prep. @Smarinov, how much did you score on verbal on this test. Just curious to know at what level such questions come up

If I encounter such sentence as above in the real GMAT, I will go really crazy.

Cheers,
Uplugged

This was a tricky one. I almost went with C as well until I realized news is singular. Thanks for the explanation.
