Will go with B
better than their parents did seems correct

simple past is correct in this context
SC gurus correct me if im wrong

my ans wud be B ...

only B gives the right parallel structure required...

A) use of ''have'' is wrong...

C) use of ''had'' shows its past perfect which is not so...

D) no referent pronoun...

E)0 same like D

take the sentence like '' many americans expect to LIVE better tahn their parents LIVED'' and it makes that clear

I feel A is better than B. My rationale to choose A is that
the sentence does not have any time reference. If there is
a time reference than we can use simple past -- did. Lacking
time reference forced me to choose A, which uses present perfect
-- have [lived].

I would like to know others thoughts on this.

IMO (B) is best.

Here sentence is saying, that the period parents had already lived(I presume period when parents were young)

answer is b as well as we can't substitute verb by have except for verb, in first part of a comparative, has auxiliary verb have.

B is correct, I believe.
B - here "live" refers to the lifestyle. Thus, simple past is justified because lifestyle of the present generation is compared with that of the previous generation.
A - incomplete because of "have"
C - incomplete because of "had". Also "had lived" gives a wrong connotation that the parents are no more;-)
D & E - "expecting" after ";" without subject is ungrammatical.

I would go for A. No soild explaination though, just going with the sound and my daily usage.

I don’t C is completely out. What we are comparing is how current Americans expect to live compared to how their parents had lived

Between ‘they still expect to live better than their parents did live’ and ‘they still expect to live better than their parents had lived’, I’ll go with the latter.

What’s the OA?

Buddies, the question is a real conceptual :)


Concept : the auxiliary verbs "do" / "did" / "does" can be use to avoid repetition of normal verbs. "have" / "had" can not offer such a flavor :)

e.g.
Do you know him ? Yes I do. --> replacing know
He eats fish and so do you. --> replacing eats

B should be it.

Since the OA is not yet given by Bhai, I will give my thoughts about this question too.

D and E are not right for me, because I believe "they" can be used.

I am leaning towards B.
they still expect to live better than their parents did. It sounds better in my ears, and I do believe with this verb you can avoid the repetition.

I live in The Netherlands and we speak Dutch. Dutch, German and English belong all to the German (germaanse) language and many grammar is simular. I sometimes translate sentences to the Dutch language. I was just wondering how many of you are able to do the same and if this is an benefit for you.
