Here I would go for C here. I am not sure about vice verse and if gmat adore usage of such constructions that is why I stick to more usual.
C and E are very simular, but because of usage this ; I think we must put comma after therefore

B should be the answer. The first sentence talks about all whales and hippos. So C could either mean a whale could be a relative to a whale as well as a hippo.

In GMAT, if two options are almost same, except a single rule, then is it OK to conclude that either of the two will be the answer?
Here in our case C and E are almost same. except the idiom known as.

A is wrong because <Independent clause> ; <Independent clause>
B sounds correct because properly seperated by ";" and clearly mention that whale is hippopotamus closed living relaive and vice versa.
C is wrong because they is referring to whales or hippopotamus ? pronoun must refer to one ancedent.
D and E wornd with the expression " to be" which is considered as wrong in GMAT

as per Manhattan SC(2008) book,pg 195
RIGHT:we KNOW her TO BE brilliant. She is KNOWN TO BE brilliant.
RIGHT:we KNOW him as "reggie". He is KNOWN AS "reggie".

WRONG:We KNOW her AS brilliant.(KNOW AS=named)

is there any general rule that KNOWN AS is preferred over KNOWN TO BE in GMAT English

Surely "known as" is the right idiom not "known to be"
C is not too wordy and correctly use the punctuation of ";therefore,"
