While the two differ greatly in bla bla bla, <--- what are the two things here that differ... they are the state of NJ in the USA and the country of Pakistan not the GDP.

Eg: One of the greatest cricket player of all time, Sachin also knows how to play tennis. - Correct
One of the greatest cricket player of all time, tennis was also known to Sachin - yak

While the two differ greatly in size, population, and geography, the GDP of the state of NJ in the USA is roughly equivalent to the entire country of Pakistan.

a. While the two differ greatly in size, population, and geography, the GDP of the state of NJ in the USA is roughly equivalent to that of the entire country of Pakistan.

b. While the two differ greatly in size, population, and geography, the state of NJ in the USA and the country of Pakistan have GDPs that are roughly equivalent.

Guys why is "a" wrong?

modifier is correctly placed right next to two states in B

This is again a modifier question...What/Who differes in size, popuplation and geography?...logically size, population cannot refer to GDP..those are attributes of a geographical region.

hence A is wrong

Agree :)

Option A is wrong because when the context is set that there are two different areas, it should be followed by their name and then the reason. Secondly when we say country of pakistan we mean it in totality so no need to mention entire.
