IMO we need to use the word for making contrast, such as 'however', 'although', etc, so A and B are out.
C and E has errors : 'they' doesn't agree with a singular noun 'priest'.
D should be correct

IMO this is a question testing the use of modifiers.
a) Having been forbidden by society to marry it was not unusual for a priest during the Middle Ages to sire a family.
Having been forbidden by society to marry should modify priest rather than it
b) Forbidden by society law to marry, it was not unusual for a priest during Middle Ages to sire a family.
Forbidden by society law to marry should modify priest rather than it
c) Although they were forbidden by society law to marry, it was unusual for a priest during the Middle Ages to sire a family.
they has no antecedent (perhaps Middle ages) what makes no sense
d) Although a priest was forbidden by society law to marry, it was not unusual for a priest during the Middle Ages to sire a family.
