it depends on the sentence.
If you are using the group AS A COLLECTIVE- with an emphasis on something that the group does, or is, then use singular.
if you're using the group,talking about an action or state in which the individuals PARTAKE SEPARATELY, then use plural.
A group of adults are self-focused.
here it seems that the author wants to emphasize a property of each individual in the group; therefore he uses the plural form.

for ex . a handful of marbels are good see together.. Here we are discussing about marbles.
ex1: this group of students is very naughty.
In your example, it is emphasizing on people not as a group. Still if you provide us with the complete sentence ..we can explain you better
