If Mount St. Helens follows a  timetable like that of 
Bezymianny , a Siberian volcano that was also formed by 
lava from the Pacific plate, its eruptions will continue well 
into the next ccnhny. 
(A) timetable like that of Bezymianny 
(B) timetable that is like Bezymianny's 
(C) timetable similar to Bezymianny's 
(D) similar timeable to Bezymianny 
(E) similar timetable to Bezymianny's

OA is A. I dont feel there is any close contender. "a Siberian volcano " after comma can only modify Bezymianny not Bezymianny's. So B, C AND E are immediately out. D is comparing st helen's timetable with Bezymianny rather than it's volcano. So only correct option is A. I picked A and it was correct also. But when i analyzed afterwards.. i wondered that doesnt " like" always compares nouns. Here "that of" is followed by like. What am i missing here.. this LIKE vs AS confusion will take my life one day. :cry:

Lets see if I can explain this.

The preposition "of" is used to show possessiveness. 

So when we say , "son of A" , we mean "A's son".

So " that of A" = "A's  "
Similarly,
...that of Bezymianny = Bezymianny's 

These two expressions are replacable, but the complete sentence should be grammatically correct, and not just the prepositional phrase.

In the SC above, the phrase following the comma, is "a siberian volcano". So the noun immediately before it should be a volcano.
If we use the prepositional phrase, the sentence is grammatically correct. But if we use the direct noun and its possessive, we would get a grammatically wrong sentence.

I don't think there is anything else to analyze here.
