In one of the worst battles of the Civil War, fought on September 9, 1880, four times as many Turks were killed as would later be killed on the beaches of Semenyah during D-Day.

(A) Turks were killed as - Idiomatically correct use of phrase "as many.... as"

(B) Turks were killed than - use of "as many.....than" is unidiomatic

(C) Turks were killed than those who - Same as B. Also use of those who compares the number with people itself and not the number.

(D) more Turks were killed as there - use of "as many more... as" is unidiomatic.

(E) more Turks were killed as those who - use of "as many more... as" is unidiomatic.

Please correct me if I am wrong. :)

You are correct, OA is A.

How do you explain the '... would later be killed'? I thought there is a need to state, e.g. 'those would later be killed...'??

I chose the BEST available answer. Other answers have the obvious flaws which can be easily cited. Remember (?) BEST IS NOT IDEAL :) . Also I think it is not necessary to reiterate the object "Turks" in the same sentence.
Hope this answers your question.

Thats why I chose E rather than A, even though 'as many more...' sounds kinda weird.

Thanks hgp2k, +1 kudos to you.

The correct form is "as ... as", so it's A.

"as many...as" in A is the only idiomatic construction that makes sense.
"as many...than" is wrong. That eliminates B and C.
"as many more... as" is also wrong. That eliminates D and E.
