not easy to decide between D and E, I would have gone with D if I didnt know the answer.

my logic was the employees of should be followed by an organisation name, for eg we cannot say the "employees of construction", can we ?

Added to the increase in the hourly wages requested last July, the railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.

(A) Added to the increase in the hourly wages requested last July, the railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.
(B) Added to the increase in the hourly wages which had been requested last July, the employees of railroad are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.
(C)The railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits added to the increase in the hourly wages that were requested last July.
(D) In addition to the increase in the hourly wages that were requested last July, the railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.
(E)In addition to the increase in the hourly wages that were requested last July, the employees of railroad are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.

I could eliminate options A, B and C but of D and E which is the best one?

IMO no answer is correct.

"Added to the increase" is incorrectly adding "increase in the hourly wages" to "the railroad employees", which is illogical. So choice A and B are out

As for the Choice C, D and E "increase" is singular and therefore "that were requested last July" should be "that was requested". hence C, D and E are also out.

What is the source?

I disagree with the OA. I still think it is D.

I doesnt make any sense to say "the employees of railroad". This statement would only work if you were saying that the employees here are working directly for "railroad". For example, "the employees of Mr. Smith" would be the correct usuage, while the "Mr. Smith employees" does not make much sense.

So when we are talking about employees of a specific industry, "the railroad employees" should be correct.

Thoughts?

is railroad considered an industry?? I rather think that railroad is a transportation industry.
