I vote D.

C sounds bizarre... "but only 20 percent in 1990" seems like it should be
"but only 20 percent did so in 1990"

In 1929, nearly 90 percent of the US population attended a movie once a week; and only 20 percent in 1990.

A) week; and only 20 percent
B) week; while 20 percent did so
C) week, but only 20 percent
D) week, a number that fell to 20 percent
E) week; as compared to 20 percent

After semicolon, we need a sentence that can stand alone itself..hence the only option is D. This was easy! :)

I agree with the folks above that to have a semi-colon, the portion of a sentence following must be able to stand on its own. ABE don't qualify this criteria. The answer is C by poe. D says that whatever the number that represented 90% of U.S. population in 1929 went down to 20% of pop. in 1990. If D had said "a percentage that fell", I think D would make sense. Also, I believe ellipsis can be applied to C.

What's the OA?

Nice discussion and these questions are tricky ones indeed. OA is C
OE: In this context, a semicolon is incorrect, since what follows it is not an independent clause. Choice C uses the construction that is most parallel to the first half of the sentence, as well as the logical conjunction but
