I choose C. 'each' does not have any plural subject before it. Any subject after 'each' will take a singular form only.

Inscribed with the names of each of the thousands of Americans who lost their lives in the war, Maya Lin's Vietnam veterans' memorial in Washington, D.C., has become a favorite stop for visitors to the nation's capitol.

A) who lost their lives in the war
B) that lost their lives during the war
C) who lost his life in the war
D) whose life the war took
E) from whom the war took a life

Go for A though I have little doubt...

A it is.

that is generally not used with people. Hence B is not the best choice here.

IMO B

IMO B is out bc that cannot be used as a reference for humans.
Besides - who here is better than that.

In addition, I took out C very quickly mainly bc of "his" - his has no reference in the sentence.

IMO A
