I got this wrong but I think the trick to answering the question is recognizing that as well as emitting far less ... is an adverbial modifier.

"as well as" threw me off. Not sure if same thing happened to anybody else. If you read the part of the sentence after the comma without "as well as" it all makes sense. Tricky ... Tricky ... Tricky

I found 'they' ambiguous in C but still chose C. 'as well as' with 'emitting' did not sound right to me in A.

Ya..I went for B, but after reading Amits explanation, its a sure case of direct effect. Moreover, if you notice Comma, its clear that as well as is acting as adverbial modifier :(

OA is A. However, burn as well as emitting does not sound || to me.
Also, according to me, CO2 is countable, so therefore fewer is better than less.
Could anybody elaborate?
thanks

@noboru: The link https://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/modifiers-using-ing-t2083.html will help you clear the concept of adverbial modifiers. It helped me and I was then able to get this ques rite.

Hi Experts,

Could you please check out the following question:

Q:Diesel engines burn as much as 30% less fuel than gasoline engines of comparable size, as well as emitting far less carbon dioxide gas and far fewer of the other gasses that have been implicated in global warming.
A of comparable size , as well as emitting far less carbon dioxide gas and far fewer of the other gasses that have
B of comparable size, as well as emit far less carbon dioxide gas and far fewer of the other gasses having
C of comparable size, and also they emit far fewer carbon dioxide and other gasses that have
D that have a comparable size, and also they emit far fewer of the other gasses having
E that have a comparable size, as well as emitting far fewer of the other gasses having

I think C is good. But OA is A. Could anyone explain the reasoning and the usage of the rule in this sentence.

Thanks in advance.
