D seems to be the best choice.
A is incorrect because it improperly implies that Selma turned away from literary realism specifically in 1909.
B is incorrect because it awkwardly begins with the subject pronoun She and never clearly ties it back to Selma.
C is incorrect because it awkwardly uses the present progressive participle winning.
Clearer illustration: Sam got to the pub earliest, so he became the first ordering his beer. <--Yuck!
E is incorrect because it awkwardly uses a restrictive relative clause + simple past that won.
Clearer illustration: Sam got to the pub earliest, becoming the first that ordered his beer. <--Yuck!
