Choice B is correct

Choice E is not the correct answer. The verb "have been" suggests that Lincoln's fellow citizens are presently inspired by his work; however, this is not the case.

This choice is tricky.

C.

The star is still living and the age is in progressive form.

IMO A, maintains tense and parallelism.

Abraham Lincoln’s simple writing style and enduring themes—the spirit of the common man, the importance of hard work, and the necessity of cooperation—was as inspirational to his fellow citizens as it is to ours.

A) was as inspirational to his fellow citizens as it is
B) were as inspirational to his fellow citizens as they are
C) has been as inspirational to his fellow citizens as they are
D) had been as inspirational to his fellow citizens as it was
E) have been as inspirational to his fellow citizens as

A, C are out due to subject agreement. am confused with 'B', D, E
I picked 'D' due to tense mood. Wats OA??

+1 B

Simple past is required because the sentence refers to Lincon's fellow citizens, who lived in the past.

for original question, it is B. But E is very close. Can someone tell me what is the error in E other than if we assume that 'Abraham Lincoln’s fellow citizens were in past'

i think the answer is B. i think subject -verb agreement issue and the usage of right tenses eliminate A and D and C quite clearly. E uses present perfect , but for an event which happened in the past and ended in the past we can not use present perfect , 'had been ' may be a bit closer to the right option but 'have been' is wrong .

whats the OA of 2nd question?

A and C are contenders..

c makes more sense...long time back I answered it as A.
reason: the star is still enduring, so the answer should have present participle.

the answer must be participle.

For the 1st Questions I am going with E.

B says:

were as inspirational to his citizens as they ARE( and not were) to ours
( the choice has are , which doesnt make sense)

B for the original question.

Rephrase ours to our fellow citizens (ours in effect means our fellow citizens).
