Hello,

Can anyone pls advise which of the below mentioned is correct .

1)The players' helmets need to be repaired so that they will be ready to be used at practice on Sunday.
2)The players' helmets need to be repaired so that helmetes will be ready to be used at practice on Sunday.

It will be helpful if you can explain the ans as well.

I think both sentences are correct. I think you're wondering why 1 is correct

The players' helmets need to be repaired so that they will be ready
they refer to helmets ... player's act as adjective here, not noun

RULE: possessive pronoun can refer back to possessive noun
player's helmet is not possessive

the 1st one is the correct answer.

in case you wonder why not the second one--because the 2nd is avoidable and redundant construction--the helmet needn't be used again as the sentence specifies that the readiness of helmets is of consequence. Players cannot be used once ready.
infact,2nd is a wrong sentence construction.

I think the first option is better based on the principle of concision. According to MGMAT, they cannot refer to the players because of the mentioned possessive poison rule.

There are 2 nouns before they -

possessive noun - players' (plural)
simple noun - helmets (plural)

they is ambiguous. Its better to avoid such constructions.

This post is interesting. Thought of sharing some rules :

Rule 1
Possessive pronoun can refer to noun e.g. the governor dissolved HER team

HER = possessive pronoun

her refers to governor (noun)


Rule 2
possessive pronoun can refer to possessive noun

Jose's room is so messy that HIS mother calls HIM a pig

HIS = possessive pronoun : can refer to Jose's

Rule 3
object pronoun and subject pronoun can not refer to possessive noun

Jose's room is so messy that HIS mother calls HIM a pig

HIM = object pronoun: cannot refer to Jose's

Jose's room is so messy that HE mother calls HIM a pig

HE = subject pronoun: cannot refer to Jose's


CORRECT : Jose's room is so messy that HIS mother calls JOSE a pig

I think 1st one is incorrect as MGMAT also says that" They", "Them" can refer only to person not to object and in this case helmets are the subject so use of "they" is not right.
