As the reintroduced red kite population has grown across southeastern England, biologists have become increasingly convinced that without their help, they would not have survived.

(A) without their help, they would not have survived == ambiguity on whom does they refer to... wrong
(B) without help, it would not have survived == correct choice
(C) without their help, it would not have survived == wong usage of it
(D) without help, they would not have survived == population is singular.
(E) without help, the birds would not have survived == no where it is mentioned that we are talking about birds , so its wordy.

I will go with B... pls correct me if i am wrong.

@hirendhanak : B is incorrect, because "it" refers to Population. We are not saying that population has survived. There is no noun existing in the sentence which can survive( Remember Dangling Modifier:) ). Here, we need to introduce the subject which can survive.
I hope I am able to explicate a bit. :)

hi ..
I go with E ...I reckon it is a case of resumative modifier ..hence we need to reintroduce the subject -"birds"
