Does Early Decision Boost Success Odds At Duke Fuqua (MBA)?
Around this time of the year, many candidates reach out to us at MBA Admit.com to ask whether we believe Early Decision really helps to boost their odds of gaining admission to Duke Fuqua. The Early Decision deadline this year is on September 19, 2019. Yes, applying in the Early Decision pool does seem to have a strong, positive impact on your admissions odds, for many reasons.
Submitting your application in the Early Decision admissions pool boosts your odds relative to the odds you will face in the regular admissions pools, because upon Early Decision admission you must pay a deposit to secure your spot at Fuqua. This is supposed to signal that you have made a commitment to Fuqua. For your willingness to make an early commitment and pay the deposit, Fuqua is often willing to show more flexibility with the candidate who has a modest flaw in their profile. So if you have a less-than-ideal GMAT score, or an undergraduate GPA that you wish was stronger, etc., the Fuqua admissions committee will often give you more latitude to override that flaw during the Early Decision pool than you will likely receive in the regular decision pools of Round 1 through Round 3.
If you want to boost your odds of admission and you don’t mind handing over a deposit to secure your spot, Early Decision may be for you.
Of course, we often get a second question about Early Decision. What happens if you gain admission under Early Decision, pay the deposit, but later get into a school you prefer, like MIT? At MBA Admit.com, we have seen candidates simply choose to lose their Duke deposit and accept the school they prefer. We don’t comment on whether you should do this or not, but we can state factually that we have seen some candidates choose to do this. For those candidates, they were willing to pay the deposit in exchange for getting a boost toward success in the Duke Fuqua admissions process and they were willing to lose the deposit if they got into another school that was their first choice.
