ME- Hi there, thank you for taking out the time for speaking with me. Could you tell me something about you? Sal- Hey, nice to talk to you, I'm Salar Shoaiby, a local citizen of Canada and a student at Degroote School of Business in MBA Co-Op Program. I'm Happy to Share my experience with you.
Me- So, why is co-op over the Full time MBA Program? Sal- Well, the co-op program is quite unique given that it allows the students freshly out of the college to get an MBA degree while still exploring the options through internships. And corporate experience is very essential to survive in the business world, so the internships give them an opportunity to work full time and get an hands on experience
Me- What would you say are the most rewarding and least rewarding, say in terms of Salary, fields in internships? Sal- I think that the most rewarding field would be banking as they are the ones getting paid the highest salary in the internships and beyond. Health care might be the least paid internships
Me- Tell me something about Toronto Sal- Toronto is a very happening city and there are lots of internship opportunities available here. This is not to suggest that it is the only location that students go to as the students get internships in several areas including Hamilton and other surrounding areas. Toronto is quite expensive to live in but it is completely worth it as the opportunities are numerous.
Me- How did you apply to the internship? Sal- I took support of the McMaster university's extremely helpful online portal that opened doors to the opportunities and networking as you know is quintessential.
Me- Many people say that the post- MBA salaries at the co-op programs of degroote are not comparable to that of the MBA programs in USA, why would you think is that? Sal- The post MBA degroote co-op students salary varies widely with highest going to the Finance background students, more than 80k CAD. This might be because the students are usually freshly out of the undergrad and companies tend to prefer more work experience. However, the salaries grow exponentially after the first year.
Me- Do the international applicants get paid less than the domestic ones? Sal- Pay equity is not an issue at Degroote, everyone gets paid a fair amount International or otherwise
Me- Speaking of equality, like other B-Schools, do the Female candidates, LGBT community, Black members have a leverage over the other candidates? Sal- Yes, most certainly the B-schools all want diversity of thoughts and I encourage the candidates to leverage those opportunities currently awarded to them. The profile evaluation is very "HOLISTIC" and they donot concentrate too heavily on the GMAT score which is why the average GMAT is not in the 700's even though the University is very reputed.
Me- Could you tell me about the clubs in the University? Sal- There are so many industry and culture based clubs you can find on website. I am the VP of the Marketing club and it gives me a lot of opportunities to explore myself and also it gives me a lot to talk about in the internship interviews. I would definitely suggest people to join and participate in those clubs.
Me- Thank you for you time, it was a pleasure speaking with you. Our friends on GMATClub would find this helpful. Sal- Always happy to help. Glad to have shared some information with you.
Narenn how do I attach it to a degroote thread? Or can we make this a special thread of mine I have interviewed a lot of candidates from so many B-schools. And Adcoms It could be helpful Special talks thread
