EA, GMAT Score for CBS EMBA (NY): What is Good Enough?
Each year recently, the volume of applicants to top EMBA programs has been rising. Once the Executive Assessment (EA) test became an option a few years ago, applicant numbers increased notably because the EA is much easier to prepare for than the GMAT, therefore many additional busy executives could entertain applying to a top EMBA program. The blossoming number of applicants has affected what standardized test score is good enough for admission to top EMBA programs, including Columbia Business School's EMBA-NY programs (Saturday and Friday/Saturday versions).
What EA score is good enough that a candidate is unlikely to be rejected based on that score? A score of 150 is generally safe, with a quant score of at least 10. Nonetheless, with an excellently honed application (essays and recommendations), candidates have been admitted to Columbia’s New York EMBA programs with EA scores in the low-140s.
What GMAT score is good enough that a candidate is unlikely to be rejected on the basis of that score? A score of 630-640 or higher is generally safe, with a solid quant performance.
Columbia is prone to give greater leeway on the EA and GMAT scores to underrepresented minorities and women. Most male candidates will be taking a risk to submit an EA score under 150 or a GMAT score under 630 in the CBS EMBA-NY pools.
Please note, also, that an EA score of 150 and a GMAT score of 630 are relative “soft” scores, so you will want to make sure your application is excellent in all other ways, particularly with regard to your essays and recommendations, so that you make a compelling case for admission.
