Deferrals at Kellogg?

Question

I understand that the school was quite inflexible at the start of the pandemic towards requests made by students, particularly international students, and didn't grant any requests unless it was an extreme situation for instance, someone dying.

Does anyone know how / if the school's stance has changed on this? I spoke with an alumni who mentioned the school had started accepting more requests but not as many as say HBS or even Ross.

Any current students or alumni who could share a bit more about this? Very anxious here as an international student.

Yes, received an admit this year. Very grateful, ofcourse, but also worried about how it would be for folks who are attending classes halfway around the world in varied timezones.

Congrats on your acceptance to Kellogg!

We have discussed this issue at length internally at Admissionado. While there is no official consensus or conclusion, seeing as it is a dynamic situation, we expect that deferrals will once again become less flexible. The belief is that with the vaccine rollout and the amount of time between now and the Class of 2023 start, there will be less willingness for the MBA programs to grant deferrals. Understandably, it has been a mess this year (financially and operationally) and the ability to get things somewhat back to normal is of high priority. Plus, if you know this far in advance that you plan to attend, you can theoretically make reasonable accommodations to be in a less disruptive time zone.

If the pandemic is in fact under way more control by the fall, we believe the school will expect you to attend or forfeit your acceptance. The school can also delay this decision for a while seeing as they actually have plenty of time before having to let students know what form the fall semester will take.

You can certainly inquire to the admissions committee about a deferral without any risk to your acceptance, but you may not necessarily get the answer you would like.

Thanks for sharing this! I do want to directly ask the school about how they might be approaching this in the next year but I'm quite apprehensive since I'm not sure how to broach this subject without coming off as ungrateful (or worse!) I see you've mentioned that the conversation would not impact my offer but it still remains a nagging thought at the back of my mind

I think I'll try to connect with a few students who may have deferred to learn more about their experience first and then reach out to the school.

That's entirely your call. While I continue to doubt that they will hold this against you, if you are really that concerned, you can call them anonymously or use an alias. Regardless of your approach, I doubt the Kellogg admissions office will (a) know that their plan is for next fall now and (b) tell you at this time with 8+ months to go before matriculation.

You might end up having to wait this out or make a decision with limited information. Good luck!
