Radiounactive:
Congrats on your acceptance to Kellogg!
We have discussed this issue at length internally at
Admissionado. While there is no official consensus or conclusion, seeing as it is a dynamic situation, we expect that deferrals will once again become less flexible. The belief is that with the vaccine rollout and the amount of time between now and the Class of 2023 start, there will be less willingness for the MBA programs to grant deferrals. Understandably, it has been a mess this year (financially and operationally) and the ability to get things somewhat back to normal is of high priority. Plus, if you know this far in advance that you plan to attend, you can theoretically make reasonable accommodations to be in a less disruptive time zone.
If the pandemic is in fact under way more control by the fall, we believe the school will expect you to attend or forfeit your acceptance. The school can also delay this decision for a while seeing as they actually have plenty of time before having to let students know what form the fall semester will take.
You can certainly inquire to the admissions committee about a deferral without any risk to your acceptance, but you may not necessarily get the answer you would like.
Good luck,
Admissionado
