Hi,
So I'm looking to apply for a few European schools as well as Rotman in R1 (September 2021).
I've shortlisted a few consultants and have already spoken to a couple of them (free consultation calls). What they've advised me is to hire a consultant now itself and start the process, as the earlier you start, the better it is, and since you're paying the same amount irrespective of time, it would increase the ROI.
The thing is that I have started the research process early (Feb onwards) because I am also parallelly preparing for CFA Level 3, and want to completely devote time to prep in April and May (the exam is scheduled for May 29). It will be extremely hard to juggle between a job, CFA prep as well as MBA prep at the same time, so I want to take it step by step, and then fully commit to MBA prep from May 30th onwards.
I have also read that later in the process (say June onwards), most of the good consultants get booked.
Keeping this in mind, what do you suggest I should do, as I know clearing the L3 exam and getting the CFA charter would aid in my application as well but I don't want to adversely impact my MBA application chances as well as I really need to start it by next year.
Any advice will be much appreciated!

I remember discussing this concern with you. So, as I said, you should go for it now if you think the consultants you have contacted will not take much time of yours in the early months. Being a consultant myself, the candidates who start early do not have to give a lot of time to applications in the first few months. Generally, its only 1 hour a week and starting early does not take up a lot of your time but definitely help you set in the right direction. This will rather supplement your CFA level 3 preparation as with each consulting session, and you will be much more sorted than before and at peace (at least I would like to believe so for my applicants). Also, it will help you get an edge over others with very little investment (as I said, just an hour a week).
So, based on how I start with my applicants, these are my two cents to provide you with some clarity. Also, you can be flexible with time in your early months and manage your time better. But every consultant works in a different manner, and you will have to ask each of them the time they'll be taking in your early months and if you can manage that. Also, you must be able to analyze if you will benefit from early engagement with them.
Further, since you're targeting Europe schools, you must have a look at this session. It's on 27th March, and it will provide you clarity over how to start with your applications for INSEAD, HEC and IMD. It may prove useful to you.
