Hi Community,

I am applying for full time MBA for fall 2023. I have few questions to ask-
1. I have given GRE not GMAT for MBA admission. Will it going to effect me in my application selection process? Like giving priority to GMAT students over GRE candidates.
2. I have a GRE score of 331 (Verbal-161, Quant-170) and I have total 5 years of work experience but my Bachelor's grades is around 2.9. Will I have the chances of getting an admit in Darden or any other top B schools.

Would appreciate suggestions and replies from the active folks.

fd1709  There is no such preference between GMAT or GRE, you will be analysed at par with GMAT students. Don't worry.

Regarding your gre evaluation, I will suggest you brief a bit about your profile. Your work experience, your GPA, extracurricular activities and so on. Admission is not dependent upon just a GMAT/GRE score.

I have a GRE score of 331 (Verbal-161, Quant-170) and I have total 5 years of work experience but my Bachelor's grades is around 2.9. Will I have the chances of getting an admit in Darden or any other top B schools. A: Is there a reason why your GPA is so low? Can you offer a justifiable explanation in the optional essay? Yes, you can definitely get admitted (having a really score GRE score such as yours helps), but there might be a randomness to your chances. Some schools will be willing to overlook your GPA while others might make it a bigger deal. It's hard to tell definitively. The best suggestion is to apply to a few more schools (and extend your range) than you normally would to hedge. We are happy to discuss further. As mentioned in the above posts, there is no such preference between GMAT or GRE, but definitely, each has its merit. To understand more, you could refer to our article on GRE over GMAT- Which one should you pick? , you will get some beneficial insights! Coming to your GPA, it's a tad low, but it's manageable! All you need to do is add a bit more about your overall statistics and give brief information about any additional courses and certifications and academic accolades, and you are good on the academic front. Moreover, you can draft an additional letter justifying your reasons and providing other stellar examples of your academic brilliance. Furthermore, you have a lot of experience; hence it won't be hard to pick out some stellar leadership examples from your long tenure! Also, it might help to highlight your roles and responsibilities, critical projects, and international experience and back them up with excellence in the field. Also, it would help if you mentioned your ECAs; that should help start an interesting conversation between you and AdComs. Furthermore, I suggest you go through our article on Significance of ECAs for MBA Application , to understand the importance of drafting exemplary ECAs essays! Overall, your profile is a bit brief. You have to be more specific about your roles & responsibilities and draft stellar leadership examples. For schools, I would suggest schools like NYU, Stern, Tepper, and Haas School of Business just to be on the safe side. Apologies for the delayed response but we hope this finds you in time still.

Here is a point-wise response:

1. Schools do not have a preference for GMAT or GRE, unless a school categorically mentions that it doesn't accept a certain score. So, you are absolutely fine with a GRE score as well.
2. This is going to be a bit tricky because a lot will depend on how the school perceives your candidature. The best that you can do is to address the reason for your low GPA in an appropriate manner (without making it sound like an excuse) in the Optional Essay.
