A horticultural study examined the proportion of seedlings that flowered within 8 weeks under five nutrient levels and four greenhouse temperatures. Nutrient level was measured on a five-point scale, where 1 represents the lowest concentration and 5 the highest. The values on the vertical axis represent the proportion of seedlings that flowered.
Select from each drop-down menu the option that completes the statement most accurately based on the information provided.
The difference between the highest and lowest proportions of seedlings that flowered was greatest at nutrient level , and at that nutrient level the highest proportion occurred at .
Official Solution:
Drop-down 1:
For each nutrient level, compare the highest and lowest points among the four temperature lines. We are looking for the nutrient level with the greatest vertical spread between those points.
The spread is clearly greatest at nutrient level 4. At that level, the highest proportion is about 0.70 and the lowest is about 0.22, a difference of about 0.48. The spreads at the other nutrient levels are noticeably smaller.
Therefore, the correct selection is 4.
Drop-down 2:
Now look only at nutrient level 4 and identify which temperature corresponds to the highest point.
The highest point is about 0.70 and belongs to the 18°C line.
