Passengers enrolled in an airline’s frequent flyer program can qualify for free reward flights by earning a certain number of miles over a two year period. Any miles earned that have not been redeemed two years after they were earned expire (no longer qualify for reward flight consideration). Passengers earn one mile for each mile traveled on a flight with the airline, for all paid flights (reward flights do not earn miles). The number of miles that must be earned for the various reward flights is as follows:

Select a flyer who, on the date of her last trip, had earned enough miles to qualify for a reward flight between any two cities in the United States or Canada, but not enough for any other reward flight, and select a flyer who, on the date of his last trip, had earned enough miles to qualify for a reward flight between the United States and Europe, but not enough for a reward flight between the United States and Asia.

The last passenger,  choice (E) , earned a total of 27,160 miles between Mar. 9, 2010, and Oct. 27, 2010, so she met the threshold for a reward flight between any two U.S. or Canadian cities, but not the threshold for any other reward flight. Thus, she’s the correct answer in the first column.

The second passenger,  choice (B) , earned a total of 44,600 between Feb. 23, 2009, and July 7, 2010, so he met the threshold for a reward flight between the United States and Europe, but not between the United States and Asia. Thus, he’s the correct answer in the second column.

The first passenger,  choice (A) , earned fewer than 25,000 miles.

Choice (C)  earned 40,060 miles, but her last trip (Dec. 9, 2010) was more than two years after her first trip (Oct. 6, 2008), so by that time the first trip’s miles had expired.

Finally, the fourth passenger,  choice (D) , flew for a total of 40,800 miles, but 10,200 of those were on a reward flight, so they don’t count toward his total earned miles for reward consideration. Without them, he qualifies for a reward flight between the United States or Canada and Central America—which is not what you’re looking for in either column.
