The sentence sets up a parallel structure:

We’re looking for:

(i) a verb meaning demonstrate or prove

(ii) a word contrasting with dystopian fantasy, meaning something ordinary or everyday

Blank (i)

A. attest to: It means to provide evidence of; to demonstrate. This fits
B. belie: means to contradict or misrepresent. Not fit
C. gainsay: means to deny or dispute.

The correct choice is A. attest to, since the novels demonstrate his ability.

Blank (ii)

D. ebullient: means enthusiastic or lively. Not correct
E. quotidian: It means ordinary, everyday. Correct
F. fantastical: means imaginary or fantasy-based. Not correct

Since mainstream novels would depict the ordinary world (in contrast to dystopian fantasy), the correct choice is E. quotidian.

Answer: A,E

I dont understand. "Mainstream" means something that appeals to the masses. How is it that you correlated it with being ordinary & everyday ?

You are right that “mainstream” often means popular or appealing to the masses. But in this sentence, that is not the contrast being set up.

Look closely at the structure: The key contrast is:

science fiction ----> dystopian fantasy
mainstream novels ----> ______ world

The contrast is not about popularity rather about genre and subject matter.
