A salad dressing requires oil, vinegar, and water in the ratio 2 : 1 : 3. Given 1 cup of oil, \(\frac{1}{3}\) cup of vinegar, and 2 cups of water, what is the maximum number of cups of dressing that can be made?

Test the recipe using the real value for one of the given ingredients to find the limiting factor. For example, given 1 cup of oil, figure out how much vinegar and water you would need.
To use the full 1 cup of oil, you’d need a half-cup of vinegar, but only one-third of a cup of vinegar is available, so vinegar is the limiting factor. Figure out how much dressing can be made using one-third of a cup of vinegar.
A total of 2/3+1/3+1=2 cups of dressing can be made. All of the vinegar will be used, but there will be oil and water left over.
